IIIS Welcomes 2012 New Students

IIIS Fall Semester 2012 Opening Ceremony took place at the Lecture Hall, FIT Building on the afternoon of Sept. 6, with the presence of IIIS Dean Academician Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, IIIS faculty Jian Li, Jianyang Zeng, Periklis Papakonstantinou, Iddo Tzameret, etc. All the freshman, new graduates, and several representatives of the old students attended the ceremony. The Opening Ceremony was hosted by IIIS Assistant Professor, Class Tutor of the freshman Prof. Charlie Qiang-Sheng Hua.

The Opening Ceremony got started with the majestic National Anthem of China.

In his welcome address, Academician Andrew Chi-Chih Yao congratulated all the students for coming to Tsinghua. And then he encouraged the freshman to explore their own interests and abilities in college and maintain their excellence after graduation. He also hoped the graduates could learn how to do research and to face all the hardship in order to succeed in the competitive world. Lastly, Academician Andrew Chi-Chih Yao pointed out that students should make full use of the excellent learning environment and the challenging research atmosphere in IIIS. He would also stand side by side with all the new students, to learn, to progress, and to share.

Prof. Charlie Qiang-Sheng Hua is hosting the Opening Ceremony

Assistant Professor Jia Xue and Associate Professor Giulio Chiribella extended their warmest welcome to all the new students on behalf of all the teachers in IIIS. Prof. Jia Xu shared with them four key elements in doing research—Ambition and Imagination, Thinking and Action, Thanksgiving and Sharing, and Be Your True Self. Prof. Chiribella encouraged students to be prepared for the coming new opportunities and challenges, for Tsinghua is a new start in their academic journey.

 

Rui Chao and Zihe Wang are giving speeches on behalf of all the old students

Rui Chao from Yao Class 2010 and PhD Candidate in 2011 Zihe Wang expressed their welcome on behalf of all the Yao Class students and graduates respectively. Rui Chao shared his understanding of Yao Class, and he said: “Yao Class has the best teachers, the best students, the most unique academic atmosphere, the warmest class, which are to be explored, created and carried forward by all the new students.” Zihe Wang shared his own learning experience, and encouraged all the students to think and raise questions.

Likang Chen, on behalf of all the freshman, was amazed by the group cohesiveness of all the Yao Class students during the Military Training and expressed his determination to improve himself and realize the value of life in IIIS. 2012 PhD Candidate Qian Yang, representing all the new graduates, said that she felt a sense of mission to carry forward the traditional virtues of Tsinghua, such as the patriotic devotion, the pursuit of excellence, and determined to create a new brilliant Tsinghua in the coming century.
