Massive Data and Data Intensive Super Computing

Abstract:

Recent years, data-intensive super computing systems (DISCS) have been created by Google and its competitors in response to the rapidly growing in dataset size and the need of high performance analyzing of massive datasets. DISCSs are different from conventional supercomputers since they acquire and maintain continually changing data sets and perform large-scale computations over the data. DISCSs open up new opportunities to achieve great advances in science, biology and health care, industry and business efficiencies, and so on, and it has become a new research field in the 21 century. This talk will discuss the concepts, motivation, challenges and research issues of DISCS. Some our solutions are also presented.
 

Short Bio:

Jianzhong Li is a professor and the chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Harbin Institute of Technology, China. He worked in the University of California at Berkeley as a visiting scholar in 1985. From 1986 to 1987 and from 1992 to 1993, he was a staff scientist in the Information Research Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, USA. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, from 1991 to 1992 and from 1998 to 1999. His current research interests include database management systems, data warehousing and data mining, sensor network, and data intensive super computing. He has authored three books, including Parallel Database Systems, Principle of Database Systems and Digital Library, and published more than200 technical papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, such as VLDB Journal, Algorithmica, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, Parallel and Distributed Database, ACM SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, INFOCOM, ICDCS, in the areas of databases, data warehousing, data mining, sensor network and data intensive super computing. He has delivered a number of invited presentations and participated in panel discussions on these topics. His professional activities have included service on various program committees for many conferences, such as VLDB, ICDE, INFOCOM, ICDCS and WWW, and he is an associate editor of Knowledge and Data Engineering and has refereed papers for varied journals and proceedings.
