A Dimensionality Reduction Approach for Large-scale Control Problems

Abstract:


This talk introduces a dimensionality reduction approach for high-dimensional control problems, where the dimensionality of the state vector often prevents the application of standard control techniques. The approach relies on a variable (feature) selection approach that, starting from a dataset of one-step state transitions and rewards, identifies which state, control, and disturbance variables are most relevant for control purposes, and reduces the problem dimensionality by removing the others. The approach is demonstrated on the dimensionality reduction of a 3D hydrodynamic model used to simulate the temperature and salinity conditions in Marina Reservoir (Singapore). Results show that the proposed approach allows identifying an accurate, yet parsimonious, low-order model that is included within an optimal control scheme to support the operation of the reservoir.

Short Bio:

Dr. Galelli is an assistant professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), Pillar of Engineering Systems and Design. Dr. Galelli graduated in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering at Politecnico di Milano in 2007, and received a Ph.D. in Information and Communication Technology from the same university in early 2011. Before joining SUTD in mid-2013, he spent two years as Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Singapore-Delft Water Alliance (National University of Singapore), where he was leading the Hydro-informatics group. He carries out research in systems analysis, data-driven modelling and optimization, particularly focusing on their application to water resources modelling and management. He is member of the IFAC Technical Committee TC8.3 on Modelling and Control of Environmental Systems, and he serves as reviewer for different international journals. He received the Environmental Modelling & Software 2011 Outstanding Reviewer Award and an Early Career Research Excellence Award (2014) by the international Environmental Modelling & Software society.
