Yaoclass 2011 Attend ITCSC-INC 2014 Winter School

(By Shuai Sun) On January 19, 2014, 35 students from Yaoclass 2011, Tsinghua University, arrived in Hong Kong and began a four-day academic visit in “ITCSC-INC 2014 Winter School”. Prof. Raymond W. Yeung, Director of the institute of Network Coding, CUHK and Adjunct Professor of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Science (IIIS), Tsinghua University attended the opening ceremony of this winter school and made the welcome speech.

All the participants attended 3 academic lectures, 1 group presentation and 1 professor forum during the following days. The Fourier Transform was the subject of the lectures, while Prof. Andrej Bogdanov, Prof. Chandra Nair and Prof. Shengyu Zhang explained it from the perspectives of concept, application areas and fast algorithms, inspiring students to think and ask questions.

In the group discussion, students from various colleges and universities had a warm discussion about the academic lectures and solutions to the problem. Prof. Andrej Bogdanov, at the end of the group presentation, praised the presentation in this winter school was “of the best quality”.

Following the academic exchange were the dinner party and a one-day tour in Hong Kong for all the participants, which enabled all to have another way of communication while enjoying the culture and beautiful landscapes of Hong Kong.

It is the eighth time for junior students at IIIS to attend the Winter School in Hong Kong. Ever since the foundation of Yao Class, junior students participating in Hong Kong Winter School for academic exchange has already become an important part in its talent-cultivating mode. Up until now, more than 240 students have attended the Winter School.
