(By Shuai Sun) The opening ceremony of China Theory Week 2014 (CTW2014) took place at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences (IIIS), Tsinghua University on Sep.8, 2014. This 1-week academic workshop attracted 4 renowned professors in theoretical computer science and 23 talented researchers from Stanford University, Princeton University, MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, UC Berkeley, Aarhus, Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiaotong University, who will present their latest research achievements.

Prof. Andrew Yao is giving his opening remarks.

China Theory Week (CTW) is initiated by Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, IIIS Dean and winner of the A.M. Turing Award in 2000. CTW2014 is the 8th workshop since 2007 and also the 5th one hosted by IIIS. This year, 4 keynote talks and 11 sessions are scheduled for participants to discuss various problems in theoretical computer science, such as algorithm, property test, and communication complexity and so on.

In his remarks at the opening of CTW2014, Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao mentioned that CTW started at IIIS, Tsinghua University since 2007 and it is a very unique conference that always brings together top students in computer science. The 4 invited keynote speakers all have close connection to Tsinghua University, IIIS and CTW. The student speakers are expected to show some of their exciting new results.

Prof. Uri Zwick from Tel Aviv University is giving the first keynote talk.

As an annual gathering of top CS theory researchers from institutions worldwide, CTW is a great opportunity for participants to exchange ideas and make new connections. It provides a great platform for graduate students to meet and discuss their research. With the increasing participation among scholars, CTW has become a brand of IIIS and enjoys a high reputation among PhD students in theoretical computer science from eminent universities.

This workshop is supported by the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education. Assistant Professor Jian Li from IIIS, Tsinghua University, and Professor Peter Bro Miltersen from the Center for Theory of Interactive Computation (CTIC), Aarhus University, are the co-chairs of this workshop committee.
