The 5th Turing Forum of 3 Institutes was held at Tsinghua University

On November 15th, the 5th "Turing Forum of 3 Institutes" was held at Tsinghua University. The event was co-organized by Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, with Tsinghua University's Institute for Interdisciplinary Information and Sciences (IIIS) as the host. Nearly 200 scholars and students from top universities and research institutes participated in the event.

The forum featured two Turing Award laureates: Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who directs Tsinghua University's Institute for Interdisciplinary Information and Sciences, and Prof. John Hopcroft, a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who leads the John Hopcroft Computer Science Center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Center on Frontiers of Computing Studies at Peking University.

In the opening ceremony, Prof. John Hopcroft reflected on the founding vision behind the “Turing Forum of 3 Institutes”, which Prof. Andrew Yao and him established to serve as a collaborative platform for young scholars.

Following his remarks, the IIIS Vice Dean Prof. Wei Xu, on behalf of the Institute, welcomed the guests in attendance. He noted that under the leadership of Prof. Andrew Yao and Prof. John Hopcroft, the three universities came together to create the “ Turing Forum of 3 Institutes ” as a platform for collaboration. In light of the rapid development of artificial intelligence, it’s vital to strengthen cooperation in this area.

A panel discussion on the theme “Past, Present, and Future: Charting the next Golden Decade of Computer Science” brought together influential scientists including Prof. Andrew Yao (Tsinghua University), Prof. John Hopcroft (Peking University& Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Prof. Wei Xu (Tsinghua University), Prof. Xiaotie Deng (Peking University), and Prof. Zhouhan Lin (Shanghai Jiao Tong University). Their dialogue addressed key topics such as the principles of cultivating scientific talent, the transformative impact of AI on scientific exploration, and strategic advice for future leaders in science and technology. The panel was moderated by IIIS Assistant Professor Li Yi.

On the same day, five parallel sessions were held, with 29 experts exchanging ideas on the current and future directions of theoretical computer science, artificial intelligence, robotic and embodied AI, quantum information science, and computer systems.

Since 2018, the three leading institutions have taken turns hosting the “Turing Forum of 3 Institutes” aiming to create a high-level academic exchange platform for young scholars in the field, allowing them to engage with senior experts and foster academic communication and friendships.
