BEIJING, June 21——The Tsinghua-MIT-CUHK Research Center for Theoretical Computer Science was inaugurated today. The Research Center is the first joint venture of its kind that MIT has established in China. It is also the first established by a Chinese University with a top American counterpart in the field of theoretical computer science.

Great attention has been focused on the field of theoretical computer science which is the underlying component of computer science. In his remarks, Professor Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, A.M. Turing Award laureate of the year 2000, Director of Institute for Theoretical Computer Science, Tsinghua University pointed out that the initial agenda of the Research Center is broadly construed on the theory of computation. It will be expanded to include additional research areas in computer science, such as computational biology and machine learning.

It is noted that the Research Center will carry out collaboration among the three universities through student exchange programs, faculty visits and joint research projects. It will further promote China’s influence in computer science and push forward its progress through student exchange and cooperation.
