The opening ceremony of China Theory Week 2010 took place at the Institute for Theoretical Computer Science (ITCS), Tsinghua University on September 13. More than 30 researchers and students in the field of theoretical computer science attend the one-week academic workshop. Among the participants, there are five renowned theoretical computer scientists and 26 talented graduate students from such eminent universities as Princeton University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, New York University, Sapienza University of Rome, Aarhus University, and Tsinghua University. They will present cutting-edge problems and their latest research results in theoretical computer science during the workshop.

China Theory Week (CTW) is initiated by Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, ITCS Director and winner of the A.M. Turing Award in 2000. Since 2007, CTW has been successfully hosted by ITCS for three consecutive years. This year, five keynote talks and 11 sessions are scheduled for participants to discuss various problems in theoretical computer science.

In his remarks at the opening of CTW 2010, Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao shared his experiences in China and introduced the background of CTW. He believed that such an international workshop would provide a platform for talented graduate students to share their innovative research ideas. Prof. Yao also hoped that with the success of CTW, more young talents would join China’s endeavor to develop theoretical computer science. Prof. Amy Yuexuan Wang, ITCS Deputy Director extended warmest welcome to all the participants at the opening.

As an annual gathering of top CS theory students from institutions worldwide, CTW is a great opportunity for participants to exchange ideas and make new connections. It provides a great platform for graduate students to meet and discuss their research.
