(Beijing Jan. 5) The First Symposium on Innovations in Computer Science (ICS2010) opened at FIT Building, Tsinghua University on January 5, 2010. Dozens of scholars, researchers and young students from such world-renowned institutions as Princeton University, MIT, and Tsinghua University gathered together to present the findings of their latest research, and exchange their latest research ideas and models.

The three-day symposium focuses on the issue of enhancing the scientific research levels of innovation in Theoretical Computer Science of China and the world, as it introduces a new concept or model, opens a new line of inquiry within traditional or cross-disciplinary areas, or introduces novel techniques or novel applications of known techniques.

Professor Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, winner of A. M. Turing Award (2000) Director of the Institute for Theoretical Computer Science (ITCS), says that the symposium, as a brand-new perspective in theoretical computer science, provides new ideas and models to better understand the trend of computer science and its further development. The symposium will play a positive role in enhancing the research levels and innovation ability of China’s information industry.

Dozens of world-renowned computer scientists including winners of A. M. Turing Award, the most prestigious prize in computer science, members of the United States National Academy of Sciences, the United States National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts and Sciences and European Academy of Sciences attended the symposium, sharing leading-edge research results covering such fields as Computational Complexity, Allocation Algorithms and Cryptography

The symposium has received substantial support from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Basic Research Program, National Natural Science Foundation.
