On Oct. 9, 2014, Dr. Hsiao-Wuen Hon, Chairman of Microsoft Asia-Pacific R&D Group, and Director of Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) lectured to Tsinghua students at Big Data Foundations and Applications, a joint course between Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences (IIIS), Tsinghua University and MSRA. IIIS Dean and Turing Award Winner Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao gave a welcome remark before the lecture began.

Dr. Hon, a distinguished Chief Scientist of Microsoft and an internationally recognized expert in voice recognition, introduced the basic knowledge and some practical applications of big data, as well as its future development from a macroscopic view. He hoped he could convey Microsoft ideas to universities and cultivate more researchers in future.
In his welcome remark, Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao stressed the importance of Tsinghua-MSRA cooperation, and hoped students could have a comprehensive understanding about big data and find their future research directions.

Tsinghua students showed great enthusiasm towards the course. An Ju, a senior undergraduate from Yao class said this course could help students know about the various applications of big data, as well as its future development. An mentioned that Dr. Hon’s lecture impressed him a lot, by using plenty of pictures, data and videos, and would be a good guidance in his future study and research in Big Data.

Ever since the establishment of MSRA in 1998, , Tsinghua-MSRA has explored tremendous academic cooperations in scientific research, talents cultivation, academic exchange, courses innovation, etc., and has achieved fruitful results. In 2007, former Microsoft CEO and Chairman of Microsoft Bill Gates and Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao unveiled the plaugue for the inauguration of Tsinghua-Microsoft Special Pilot CS Class (Yao class), dedicated to nurturing innovative world-class talents in the field of computer science. In the future, Tsinghua and MSRAwill continue to maintain close cooperations and explore more joint programs, to make contributions for the future development of China’s information science.
