The Third UTS Quantum Computer Science School was successfully held in University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), from Jan. 14 to 16, 2020, attracting 36 students from YaoClass 70, IIIS, Tsinghua University, as well as many students from UTS and other universities.

The main topics of this winter school included quantum information and quantum computing. Prof. Mingsheng Ying, Prof. Michael Bremmer, Associate Prof. Troy Lee and Lecturer Simon Devitt from UTS, as well as Prof. Luming Duan and Assistant Prof. Ran Duan from IIIS, are invited as lecturers for the school. Senior Lecturer Youming Qiao from UTS and Assistant Prof. Chenye Wu from IIIS also participated in this event.

During this three-day school, Prof. Mingsheng Ying introduced how to design quantum programs based on context free languages. Prof. Michael Bremner talked about quantum supremacy. Prof. Troy Lee introduced quantum algorithms and quantum complexity. Prof. Simon Devitt introduced about quantum simulation via coding. Prof. Luming Duan gave a speech on quantum machine learning and corresponding models. Prof. Ran Duan talked about fast matrix multiplication algorithms by Coppersmith et al.

To inspire students, during the winter school, a number of academic problems were listed to encourage them for further research in the quantum area. During the student representation section, six groups made fascinating reports and discussed with the lecturers, impressing the professors deeply.

This year is the 13th year that junior students of YaoClass are selected to attend a winter school, and this event has become an important part for YaoClass. During this winter school, the enthusiasm towards quantum information was increased, while the relationship between students was strengthened. There is no doubt that this event will be memorized by all students.
